The Department of Chinese Language & Literature of Peking University is one of the most prestigious faculties with longest history in China. Over 5000 senior specialized Chinese language writers have been educated in the Department since its establishment, such as Lu xun, Wu chengshi, Qian xuantong and Shen congewen, ect. They have contributed a lot to the development of Chinese Language and Literature. The Department is full of long-time history, professional teaching faculties and sufficient resources, bright prospect and so on. Thus it is able to cultivate a large number of superior students most of whom have become the backbone of various fields.
The Department currently contains 320 research scientists, lecturing and support staff, including foreign teachers from different countries and regions. There are 10 research centers and institutions having been established. It was authorized to enroll doctoral students and master students by the Academic Degrees Committee of State Council in 1981. And Chinese Language & Literature became the key discipline in 1987. At present, there are 10 professors, 6 associate professors and one lecturer. It attaches great importance on the overall development of the disciplines. Moreover, it puts great emphasize on scientific research in Ancient Poems, Novels and Chinese Opera which has made great achievements since its establishment.
As one of the important departments of Peking University, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses are available in the department of Chinese Language & Literature. What’s more, it owns a number of 9 teaching and research sections, including Classical Literature, Modern Literature, Contemporary Literature, Civilian Literature, Literature & Art Theory, Modern Chinese Language, Ancient Chinese Language, Chinese Linguistics, and Chinese Classical Documents. Its primary role is to promote the understanding of Chinese language, literature and history; to further the ability of students in the use of the Chinese language; and to study the development of Chinese civilization and its place in the modern world.

Application time
For Bachelor’s degree, the application time is March 3 to March 7.
For Master’s degree and Doctoral degree applicants, the duration for application is September 15 to December 15. The academic year begins in September.
Entry requirements
For Bachelor’s degree: the applicants should have high school diploma, 3 recommendation letters by 3 associate professors or above, academic records, health certificate and HSK7 certificate, be or above 18 years old.
For Master’s degree: the applicants should have Bachelor’s degree, 3 recommendation letters by 3 associate professors or above, academic records, health certificate and HSK7 certificate, under the age of 40.
For Doctoral degree:the applicants should have Master’s degree, academic records, 3 recommendation letters by 3 associate professors or above, health certificate and HSK7 certificate, under the age of 45.
