Founded in 1958, Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU) is the second oil and gas engineering programs-based institution in China, formerly known as Sichuan Petroleum Institute. In 1970 it changed its name into Southwest Petroleum Institute, then Southwest Petroleum University in 2005. After 50 years of construction and development, it has become a comprehensive national university whose fields of study cover seven branches of learning: science, engineering, management, economics, art, law, education and with engineering as its major and strong fields. For years oil and gas-oriented programs here have been ranking the top in China. SWPU is one of the first universities in China authorized to confer the PhD, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees all around the nation.
SWPU comprises two campuses, the original in Nanchong City (more than 700 mu, or 115 acres) and the second in Chengdu City (more than 2000 mu, or 346 acres) with a total of about 2800 mu, or 461 acres and the total floor space of over 800,000 square meters.
