Shantou University lies in the cross area of Guangdong, Fujian and Taiwan, thus enjoying geographical and cultural advantages in integrating business education resources among mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Shantou University Business School is one of the most important platforms connecting university education and local demands. The school aims at meeting strong demand originated by Chinese firms in the context of global industrial division in general, and that of the eastward migration of the industries in the Pearl River Delta, the rapid development of the west Taiwan Strait economic zone, as well as the integration of both in particular. Under the support of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, Shantou University attaches much importance on the development of the Business School, and has allocated special funds accordingly and continuously. Significant progress has been made over the last few years. The business administration program was elected as a Brand Program in Guangdong province in 2006, a National Program with Unique Features in 2007. At present, the Business School has formed a multi-program system, covering the undergraduate programs of business administration, accounting, international economics and trade, and e-business, and the postgraduate programs of enterprise management, accounting, and industrial economics.
In recent years, Shantou University Business School has implemented a student-centered reform initiative to transform education model, to position teaching programs properly in the context of economic globalization and meet the demand of China’s transitional economy. In so doing the school has been able to attract a large number of high-performing students, as reflected by the 3-year record of full first-choice in student recruitment, with average entrance score significantly higher than the baseline for key universities. Meanwhile, graduates from the school have been warmly welcomed by the business community and governmental departments, resulting in a full employment record. About 30% of the graduates are working in world class firms, such as the Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited, Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL), General Electric (GE), Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), Dell Inc., PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), KPMG, etc.
Mr. Li Ka-shing, the well-known Chinese business leader, is highly concerned with the development of Shantou University Business School. As the opening speaker of the school’s Economic Forum, Mr. Li has delivered lectures for the students on various topics, such as The Art of Making Money, The Art of Dedication, and The Art of Management. The Economic Forum has also invited distinguished speakers from the business community, academic community and governmental departments, and has generated wide-spread impacts.
