College of Liberal Arts is one of the nine main schools in Shantou University, with 6 subsidiary teaching and academic departments including Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, Centre for the New Studies of Chinese Culture, Research Centre of Tai Wan, Hong Kong and Overseas Chinese Literature, Centre of Chaoshan Cultural Studies, and the Institute of Chinese Language and Culture (Chinese Language Training Centre). The College has a teaching staff comprises 27 teachers with senior technical title and 13 with middle technical title, among whom there are 33doctoral and master’s degree holders. Its postgraduate programs offer MA degrees in Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Chinese Philology, Study of Literature and Art, Chinese Ancient Literature and English Language and Literature.
 
College of Liberal Arts started its undergraduate recruitment of Chinese Language and Literature major and English major in 1983, accumulating 4562 students (including junior college students) by 2008. The number of its postgraduates amounts to 207 by 2008 with 83 in the school at present, research programs involving Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Chinese Philology, Study of Literature and Art, Chinese Ancient Literature, and English Language and Literature.
 
Chinese Language and Literature is one of the key projects of the university “211 Project” involving 4 subsidiary programs including Chao Shan Dialect and Culture Study, Overseas Chinese Literary History, Chinese Aesthetic Culture and Chinese Classic Literary Works. Centre of Chaoshan Cultural Studies and Research Centre of Tai Wan, Hong Kong and Overseas Chinese Literature have launched their academic journals respectively: “Chao Study” series and “Literature of Tai Wan, Hong Kong and Overseas Chinese” (bimonthly journal). The four-volume, 2-million-word work Overseas Chinese Literary History, co-authored by Chen Xianmao, Wu Yiqi from the Research Centre of Tai Wan, Hong Kong and Overseas Chinese Literature, won the third prize in the Third Excellent Achievement Award of Humanities & Social Science Research in Chinese Universities. This is the highest award the university has achieved so far in the field of Humanities & Social Science Research, which has exerted quite a significant influence on the writing and research circles of Chinese Literature, home and abroad, receiving positive comments in return. This award has also earned Shantou University a leading role in the field of Overseas Chinese Literature Research.
 
English Linguistics and Applied Linguistics is one of the disciplines that enjoy special support of Shantou University “211 Project”. It has 3 research programs: English of Special Purpose, Translation Theory and Practice, English Language and Culture. Influential academic achievements have been attained in all of these three programs during the first phase of construction, which include more than 20 academic works and textbooks published by domestic and foreign presses, more than 100 academic papers, and more than 10 awards in both research and teaching.
