Chinese acrobatic has thousands years’ history. The earliest acrobatic was born in twiddling with tools in hunting and farming.
Chinese acrobatic used to be popular in royal palace from 2nd century to 8th century. Yet it is spreading as a more folk public art. There are a lot of places called for “home of acrobatic” since those places have the tradition to exercise the acrobatic. Wuqiao is the most representative one, locating in Hebei province and 350 kilometers’ south to Beijing. In the old time, there was a tradition to keeping the light on for 3 days, firing the fireworks, performing the acrobatic and singing and dancing throughout the night during festivals. It was something like western carnival.
In Ming dynasty (from 1368), acrobatic disappeared from the palace since the ruler thought it was vulgar show. Artists performed in temple affairs with other folk dancers. Some folk acrobatic groups gave road shows around Chinese Lunar New Year, like Gypsy. The shows were ticket free and called audiences by beating gong and drum. When finished, a straw hat would come to collect money. The tour performance lasted for about one month and when spring came, all the actors went back home to do farming.
With the development of the civilization, there are huge changes in villages. Parents who suffered from poverty do not want their children to do the hard acrobatic. People no longer exercise acrobatic for money but as a tradition and sport. Chinese government invests a lot to support the spread of acrobatic. Finally, acrobatic enter into art palace.
