When mentioned the night life of Beijing people, Houhai Bar Street and Sanlitun Bar Street should be the top two attractions to the trendy people. “Hou” means “back” while “hai” means “sea” in Chinese. Sitting to the north of the Forbidden City, Houhai gets its name from the location. Actually it is a man-made lake. Known as Back Lake, houhai and adjoining lakes Xihai and Qianhai— collectively known as the Shi Cha Sea were dug in 14th century (Yuan Dynasty) to berth barges from the Grand Canal, bringing goods from around China.
It is said that water in houhai has something magical relationship with the royal descent. With the leisurable atmosphere created by the pure lotus in green water and waving willows on the banks, it became the top resort. Several famous ancient temples dotted here. Many imperial relatives, poets, painters and merchants were attracted by the cozy environment and settled down here. You still can find princes’ mansions with expansive gardens and ponds here today. China’s last emperor, Puyi, was born in a mansion nearby. Another courtyard was the residence of Song Qingling, wife of Sun Yat-sen. Both are now museums, popular stops on neighborhood tricycle rickshaw tours.
Now, this area becomes more charming at night with the bars and boutiques opened along the lake bank. They all have unique style and absolutely different from neighbour stores. When the night comes down, colorful neon lights are on, making it like a paradise. After you finish a whole day’s rush, just have a drink in sips at the lake bank or enjoy the singer’s croon.
San-li-tun is the embassies gathering area. Gradually, many bars are set here and form a bar street. Many western people like to go there. That’s the earliest bar street in Beijing. It boasted to be the most modern area in 1980’s. Compared with Houhai, here is more western style and crazier.
