Feature
"Hutong" actually is the small lanes or narrow streets, which run through the traditional Beijing living communities. Such kind of housing arrangement style could be dated back to Yuan dynasty (1271 ~1368). Genghis Khan founded Yuan dynasty with Beijing as the capital city. It was a tradition for Mongolians living around water resources. The name of “Hutong” came from Mongolian with the meaning of “water well”.
Courtyard (or quadrangle) is the unique architecture in hutong area. Formal courtyard usually faces south and is enclosed by houses in four directions. In feudal society, strict limitations were set towards the courtyard design and decorations. Those whose courtyard decorations built beyond the status limitation would be punished. And the Forbidden City is the largest courtyard in the world, which suggests the highest social status of the owner. For a common family, it was top dream to live within one courtyard with several generations. While now, such large families no longer live together. Neighbors share the yards instead.
With Beijing city’s development, lots of hutong areas are demolished. Houhai hutong area is the most well-protected district, where you can find old man walking the bird, housewife bargaining with the vegetable market, children frolicking in a kindergarten. It is a true place expressing a real Beijing daily life. You are warmly welcome to hutong experiencing Beijinger’s life. Drum tower and Bell tower on the edge of the area are waiting for your climbing to oversee the whole architecture group.
