In the past of China, Tea house was the most popular entertaining place for people to meet friends, chat, relax and enjoy various kinds of shows. Nowadays, the culture of Tea House regains its popularity with the similar tastes and functions. In Beijing, people still sip tea in old Beijing tea house where there is a combination of Chinese traditional music show, Beijing Opera, Shadow show, dancing, acrobatic, magic and Kungfu show.

The name of Laoshe Tea House comes from a famous writer whose pen name is Laoshe. He wrote a drama named “Tea House”, which aroused significant social echoes and Laoshe Tea House was born at that time.

Teahouse can be taken as a small society. If you would like to know more about common people’s life and folk culture in China, teahouse is a good choice. In the early time, most of customers were from low class of the society. They gathered here to kill time, playing cards and chatting. Now such teahouses with cheap cost still can be found in some cities, like Chengdu (hometown of the panda).

In big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, such teahouses with low consumption seldom can be found. Most of teahouses turn to be venues for business negotiations. Yet Laoshe Tea House is one of the common teahouses for the public. It locates in the old district, next to Tian’anmen Square and Da-zha-lan shopping street. There you can taste Beijing characteristic snacks and eight treasures tea. Square tables and long chairs are kept their original appearances. All the waiters dress and serve in old Beijing style. People come here not only to drink tea but also to experience the folk tradition. Beijing opera, acrobatic shows are performed in the fragrant tea flavor, which focus strong folk features. Maybe it is a little pity for foreign friends that there is no English translation of the shows. However, simple plot and bright dressing could give you a general idea.

After enjoying the tea, just ramble around on the Tian’anmen Square. Resplendent neon lights will give you a different Tian’anmen Gate from that in daytime.
