1. A Brief Introduction to Hunan University
Hunan University is situated at the foot of the picturesque Yuelu Hill and on the west bank of the rippling Xiangjiang River in Changsha, Hunan. Hunan University traces its origin to Yuelu Academy founded in 976 A.D. Officially named in 1926, it has always been honored as a “One-Thousand-Year-Old Institution”. Chairman Mao Zedong, one of the founding fathers of the People’s Republic of China, inscribed the name of the University in 1950.
Hunan University is a comprehensive university featuring studies in engineering, with a strong foundation in science, a unique cultural background in liberal arts and its own characteristics in economics and management. Hunan University, affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China, is included in China’s “211 Project” and “985 Project” for priority investment and construction. It has 26 colleges and departments, offering 12 first-order disciplines authorized to confer Ph.D. degrees, 69 second-order disciplines authorized to confer Ph.D. degrees,171 master programs, 10 academic degree authorizations, 63 undergraduate programs, and 17 post-doctoral research centers. The programs cover 10 classes of disciplines ranging from philosophy, economics, laws, pedagogy, literature, history, to natural sciences, engineering sciences, management, and medicine. Hunan University has a staff of over 4,700 of which are more than 1,940 full-time teachers, including 1,272 professors and associate professors, 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 9 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Engineering working part-time for the university, 4 members of “One Thousand Scholars Project” and 21 Yangtze River Scholars. The student body totals nearly 30,000, of which are 20,400 undergraduate students and more than 11,000 graduate students. Hunan University covers a total area of 1,396, 000 square meters. The university library has a collection of over 480,000,000 volumes, and has well-equipped, widely accessible powerful Campus Computer Networks.
The university attaches great importance to international cooperation and communication and has established cooperative ties with nearly 100 universities in over 30 countries and regions. The cooperation involves the exchange of faculty members and students, joint research projects, exchange of academic materials and references, and joint application for international research projects and funds, etc. Since 1992, Hunan University has begun to recruit interntaional students. In 2009, Hunan University is home to over 700 students from 48 countries and regions working for bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, doctoral degrees or studying the Chinese language and culture.
2. A Brief Introduction to Scientific Research of Hunan University
Hunan University has tremendous strength in research. It has 2 state key laboratories, 1 state research center, and 31 key research bases at provincial and ministerial levels. Hunan University has formed powerful research groups in the fields of chemistry engineering, civil engineering, architectural design, mechanical manufacturing & vehicle automation, mechatronics and its automation, technology of computer application, materials science and engineering, and environmental engineering; management science and engineering, international trade, finance, accounting and so on are playing an important role in their fields of scientific research; and social sciences research is also developing well. In recent years, Hunan University has won 18 national prizes including the first-class National Science and Technology Progress Award, second-class National Award for Natural Sciences.
The State Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing for Vehicle Body (ADMVB)
The State Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing for Vehicle Body (ADMVB) was approved to be set up in September of 2006 by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. Affiliated with Hunan University, ADMVB is one of the important research bases supported by national 211 Project and 985 Project for top-priority investment and construction.
The main research directions are vehicle styling and aerodynamics, design and optimization of vehicle structure, theory of vehicle CAE and its applications, vehicle safety and human body injury biomechanics, material and manufacturing for vehicle body. ADMVB focuses on the motif of the automobile safety, energy conservation and environmental protection. In order to improve Chinese independent development ability of automobile product and the international competitive power, emphasis is placed on the original and systematic research to develop the key basic theory and technology of design and manufacturing of vehicle body.
Now ADMVB covers an area of 5,000 square meters in Hunan University and holds an innovation and experiment base of 10,000 square meters in Langli Industry Park of Changsha city. ADMVB has been furnished with various advanced equipments and instruments and owned a variety of commercial software as well as some professional software with self-owned intellectual property. The laboratory has undertaken a wide range of research programs including various key projects from state, ministries and provinces. The laboratory won various awards including one first class National Award for Science and Technology Progress and one second-class National Award for Science and Technology Progress.
The State Key Laboratory of Chemo/Biosensing and Chemometrics
With the approval from Ministry of Science and Technology of China, The State Key Laboratory of Chemo/Biosensing and Chemometrics, was set up at Hunan University in July of 2001.
The major research areas of the laboratory include nanometer and molecule scale bioanalysis, chemo/biosensing technologies, new detection techniques in life science as well as chemometrics. Over 300 important projects from the national and the province governments have been undertaken or accomplished at the laboratory. More than 600 papers are included in SCI in the past five years from the laboratory. The laboratory has also obtained many first-class research achievements, including the second-class National Natural Science Prize, the third class National Natural Science Prize, the fourth class National Natural Science and Technology Progress Prize as well as numerous Science and Technology Progress Prizes from Ministry of Education and Hunan Province. The analytical chemistry discipline of the laboratory has been authorized by Ministry of Education as the National Key Discipline.
