The School of Electronic, Information and Electrical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) originally grew out of the Department of Electrical Engineering before liberation. It was divided into the Department of Electric and Computer Science (the Department No.3) and the Department of Electronic Engineering (the Department No.4) in 1950s’. They were united again and formed a new School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 1985. In 1987, by collaborating with the State Ministry of Water Resources and Power, a new School of Electric Power was grown out of its Department of Electric Power.
The School consists of six major disciplines and offers six undergraduate programs. All the six major disciplines are granted to offer doctoral programs, including Electrical Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, Information and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Control Science and Engineering, and Instrument Science and Technology. Within those major disciplines, there are five State Key Sub-Disciplines, two Shanghai Municipality Key Sub-Disciplines, one State Key Laboratory, one Ministry of Education Key Laboratory, one Shanghai Municipality Key Laboratory, one Shanghai Municipality Engineering Research Center and one State Teaching Base for Engineering Basic Courses in Electric and Electronics.
The School has about 7200 full-time students, including 4000 undergraduate students, 800 doctoral candidates, and 2400 master candidates. In addition, there are 800 part time based masters of engineering candidates. The School has about 360 faculty members, including 110 professors, and 150 associate professors. Among them there are two members of the Chinese Academy of Science, 4 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 4 Cheung Kong Scholars. It continuously holds about 100 post doctors and visiting scholars coming from domestic and overseas.
