Undergraduate application
Entry requirements
a). International students between 18-30 years old with good health and foreign passports;
Note: According to the latest notice from the Ministry of Education, as from 2010, applicants from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who have emigrated abroad should present a foreign passport valid for no less than four years with a record of having been resident abroad for at least 2 of the last four years up to April 30. Nine months of residence abroad will be taken as one year for visa purposes.
b). International students with the completion of a high school diploma and the average transcripts B or above (over 70%).
Language Proficiency
A). Chinese language proficiency for Chinese medium programmes
Applicants for humanities, Economics, Management, Law and Arts should get the HSK Certificate of sixth level or above; Applicants for sciences should get HSK Certificate of third level or above. Students whose courses are taught mainly in Chinese during high school are exempt from the HSK Certificate.
B). Language proficiency for Bilingual Chinese-English medium programmes
English: 80 points or above for TOEFL, a grade 6.0 or above for IELTS, or other certificate of English proficiency from an approved test. Native English speakers and candidates whose high school courses are taught in English are exempt from this requirement.
Chinese: Applicants for Economics and Accounting programmes should get the HSK Certificate of fifth level or above; Applicants for sciences should get HSK Certificate of third level or above.
Note: Applicants can apply for Chinese language training in Overseas Education College and then join the HSK test held in April, June and Dec. each year in Xiamen University .

Note: Applicants, who come under the first entry requirement given in the note, should present photocopies of their passport and visa record.
l Other supporting documents including awards, internships certificate, recommendation letters, which will be highly considered.
l Applicants applying for Architecture and Artistic Design should have art background and are required to submit their artworks.
Note: Documents that are not in English or Chinese need to be officially translated and certified. All the documents will not return to the applicants whether the application successful or not.

Note: Xiamen University offers the brand-new Bilingual Chinese-English-medium Undergraduate Programmes which is an important act to promote the internationalization of Xiamen University. All the programmes are key advantageous disciplines. Outstanding teaching staff will be mobilized to cultivate distinguished international talents from home and broad. In line with the principle of selecting the best and putting quality before quantity, admissions will be granted on the basis of applicants' situation. Applicants are subordinated to the adjustment of their majors.
Accepting an offer
The application procedure normally takes seven to eight weeks. Applicants who need to take the interview or test will be informed in advance. The results will timely come out on the web of the admissions office and the admission notice and visa application form will be issued later on.
Commencement of the programme: Mid of Sep. 2010, subject to the change in the admission notice.
Taught component: 4 years (exempt: 5-year study programmes including Architecture, Clinical Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine)
Total length of programme: 4-6 years
Registration fee: 400 RMB (submit during registration)

Humanities: 18000 RMB/year; Traditional Chinese Medicine: 18400 RMB/year;
Sciences, Economics, Management, Law, Medicine, Arts: 20000 RMB/ year;

Living expenses (for reference)
Accommodation fee: The Zhangzhou Campus provides excellent living facilities and a pleasant study environment. The apartments are four-person rooms well-equipped with modern facilities, including telephones, air-conditioning, and Internet access points and so on. The accommodation fee takes 1200RMB/per person/per year (without the electricity and water fees).
Living expenses: about 500RMB/month
Xiamen University Scholarship
The University offers scholarships for excellent applicants. The recipients will have their tuition fees covered, up to a maximum of 3 years for a PhD, 2 -3 years for a Master degree and 4-5 years for a Bachelor degree. The recipients' academic performance will be assessed each year and only those achieving the required standard will have their scholarship renewed for the following year.
Postgraduate application
Eligibility
1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health.
2. Educational background and age limits:
Applicants for master's degree courses must hold a bachelor's degree.
Applicants for doctoral courses must hold a master's degree.

Application Materials
Applicants must provide copy of the following materials completed truly and correctly:
1. Application Form or Scholarship Form, completed in Chinese or in English.
2. Notarised copy of highest diploma. Applicants who are currently studying at university must also provide study certificates. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must have notarised translations into Chinese or English attached.
3. Notarised photocopy of transcripts. Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must have notarised translations into Chinese or English attached.
4. A study or research plan in Chinese or in English (minimum 800 words).
5. Two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English by professors or associate professors.
6. Chinese or English Proficiency Certificate.
7. Photocopy of valid passport.
8. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in English.
Note:
1. Applicants who apply more than two scholarships should fill related scholarship forms, but only submit one copy of completed application materials. Applicants who apply as self-supporting students should fill the application form and submit one copy of completed application materials.
2. Application materials above will not return to applicants whether they are accepted or not.
Language Proficiency Requirements
1. Programmes taught in Chinese: Scholarship students are required to take a one-year preparatory Chinese language course and pass the examinations prior to the commencement of their major study if their Chinese language is below the required level.
Minimum Chinese language requirements for programmes taught in Chinese:
Humanities, including Economics, Management, Law or the Arts: Intermediate, HSK Secondary Grade C (Level 6)
Sciences: Elementary HSK Grade C (Level 3)
2. Two-year Master's programs taught in English:
English Proficiency for programmes taught in English: TOEFL or IELTS with a minimum requirement of 80 points or above for New TOEFL, grade 6.0 or above for IELTS, or on presentation of a certificate from some other approved test of English proficiency. Native English speakers and applicants whose teaching language during undergraduate studies is English are exempt from this requirement.
3. Doctoral programs taught in English: Some PhD programs may be taught in English. Applicants applying for doctoral programs taught in English should contact prospective supervisors in advance.

• Chinese Government Scholarship
The “Chinese Government Scholarships — Postgraduate Study Project”, set up by the Ministry of Education of China (MOE), is intended to provide support for building universities to an international high level, and to promote Chinese higher education. Enrolment is managed directly by China's key universities.
The scholarship covers registration fees, tuition fees, living allowance, accommodation fees, and medical insurance and so on. The recipients' academic performance will be assessed each year and only those achieving the required standard will have their scholarship renewed for the following year.
