Guangxi University of Technology (GXUT), authorized by the China State Council, is a local engineering university directly under the leadership of the government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Preparations to establish GXUT started in 1958. However, GXUT stopped enrolling students in 1961 and suspended its operations in 1962. In 1982, Guangxi Light Industry College, Guangxi Mechanical Engineering College and Guangxi Institute of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering merged together to form GXUT again. In 1985, GXUT moved from Nanning, the capital city of Guangxi, to Liuzhou.
At present, the university covers an area of more than 197 acres, with a total floor space of 374,000 square meters. GXUT has 13 departments, two secondary colleges, five teaching sections, one independent college and 14 scientific research institutions. The university offers 42 undergraduate programs and five postgraduate programs under seven disciplines: engineering, natural science, management, liberal arts, economics, law and pedagogy, with engineering as its main focus while coordinating many disciplines.
