Short-term Chinese Language Programs
Two kinds of Short-term courses are available: one-month courses and three–month courses with a total class hours of 20 per week. Both are open during winter vacation in January and February and summer vacation in July and August. Depending on the students’ level of proficiency in Chinese language and their needs the courses available are:
1. Comprehensive Chinese
2. Chinese Listening Practice
3. Oral Chinese
4. Chinese Reading
During the courses extra curriculum activities such as sightseeing tours and other excursions will be organized so as to help students improve their language skills have a good command of Chinese phonetics and cultural features and know more about Chinese customs and have closer contact with Chinese society.
Long-term Chinese language programs
Long-term programs start in March and September respectively and the duration of each program varies from one semester one year to two years. And the applicants are required to submit the application before 15 January and 15 July respectively. These programs cater for three different proficiency levels of Chinese: elementary intermediate and advanced levels. Students can take HSK of various levels after a certain period of learning.
Major courses for long-term Chinese language learners include Basic Chinese Oral Chinese Chinese Listening Reading Writing Chinese Martial Art Chinese Horticulture Music Traditional Chinese Culture etc.
Specialized courses and Degree programs
Students who are well grounded in Chinese and meet the requirements before receiving language training or after can apply to study in a certain major that HNUST offers and obtain a certificate.
Diploma and Certificate
Degree candidates who have successfully completed their studies and passed all the examinations will be awarded an undergraduate diploma. In accordance with the rules and regulations stipulated by the Degree Committee of the People’s Republic of China candidates who have satisfied the requirements prescribed by the university will be conferred the relative degrees. Non-degree seeking candidates will receive a certificate of graduation if they have successfully completed their studies and passed the required examinations.
Confucius Institute Scholarship Program
The Confucius Institute Scholarship Program was established by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters in order to encourage students and Chinese language teachers all over the world to study Chinese or conduct research regarding Chinese language and culture in China. Hebei Normal University of Science and Technology is one of the institutes that accept the scholarships.
I. Eligibility Criteria:
1. Outstanding students at Confucius Institutes (classrooms) worldwide;
2. Mandarin teachers and those who intend to become Mandarin teachers and who are devoted to the spread of Chinese language and culture;
3. Outstanding examinees of Chinese tests organized by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters;
4. Outstanding participants of any of the following “Chinese Bridge“ Chinese Proficiency Competitions held for foreign college Students for foreign secondary school students or for foreign students in China;
5. Those who qualifies according to certain Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters agreements.
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens who are in good health.
II. Supported Majors:
Majors supported by Confucius Institute Scholarships (2010) include literature education history and traditional Chinese medicine and pharmacy. Scholarships for advanced study are offered. Duration is for one semester or one academic year. Applicants are required to have a basic knowledge of Chinese language and are under the age of 55.
III. Scholarship Coverage and Criteria:
1. Scholarship holders are exempt from tuition accommodation fees on campus and outpatient medical service;
2. Monthly allowances (RMB Yuan/month)
Advanced study:RMB1400
3. One settlement subsidy at the following rates (RMB Yuan):
a. Students who will study in China for one academic year or more:RMB 1500
b. Students who will study in China more than one semester but within one academic year: RMB 1000.
IV. Application and Evaluation:
1. Applicants please log on to the Confucius Scholarship website at http://cis.chinese.cn set up an individual account fill in the application form online print the form and sign it; then submit it to HNUST along with the other application materials before April 15th.
2. HNUST will select the best applicants and submit their documents to Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters which will make the final selection and award the Confucius Institute Scholarships.
3. Applicants may check their application process and results at any time through the individual accounts they have set up on the Confucius Institute website.
V. Application Documents:
Applicants must submit their documents according to the following instructions (all in duplicate):
1. Application form for Confucius Institute Scholarship: log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website fill in and submit the form online; then print and submit it;
2. Photocopy of passport photo page;
3. Application statement: include applicants’ Chinese learning background and study plan in China. It should be no less than 200 words. Print and sign it in Chinese or English. And for applicants who apply for Masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of other Languages please give a detailed plan for your study and research in China.
4. Chinese proficiency certificates: a copy of the HSK results is strictly required when applying for the Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of other Languages;
5. Diploma and transcripts: to be issued directly by the educational administration office of the school/university with an official stamp. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be accompanied by notarized translations in Chinese or English.
VI. Approval:
HNUST will send both the letter of acceptance and the certification of scholarship to the applicants by June 10th 2010.
VII Registration:
The scholarship winner must register before the deadline set by HNUST. Scholarships will not be kept for those who fail to register on time.
Admission Requirements
Applicants who plan to apply for a program can contact International Exchange Center via phone call or e-mail in advance and submit the following supporting documents:
(a) Completed Application Form with a recent photo of the applicant affixed;
(b) Resume of the applicant;
(c) Copies of the highest certificate of schooling and official academic record
(d) Copy of passport of the applicant;
(e) Physical examination record of the applicant;
(f) RMB 300 non-refundable application fee
In addition applications for Undergraduate Programs must submit the official transcripts of senior high school the copy of HSK level-6 certificate required by Liberal Arts majors and Level-4 is required by Sciences majors and letters of recommendation from two of his or her teachers.

The cost of meals for each student is estimated to be 20~30 Yuan a day.
The campus where international students reside lies in the Economic and Technological Development Zone of Qinhuangdao. Bus27 31 36 are available for students to travel around Qinhuangdao City. The campus is surrounded by beautiful parks sports centre and supermarkets. So living on campus is quite comfortable and convenient. Across from the street are restaurants and typical Chinese food stalls. Students can enjoy their entertainment and relaxation within walking distance.
