Within 7 days after the arrival of the applicant's application package, the admission staff reads the application form and all the supporting documents enclosed. If no necessary materials are missing, incomplete and untrue, Evaluation shall be made appropriately. If it happens that necessary materials are missing, incomplete or untrue, the admission staff shall notify the applicant and remind him or her to re-send a package that meets the requirements for admission.

When decisions are made on the admission, the foreign Affairs Office shall fill out the Visa Application for Study in China form (JW202) for the applicant to be admitted to Guangdong Ocean University and send to the Education Department of the People's Government of Guangdong Province for approval. This might take 20 days or so.

When the Visa Application is approved and issued, GDOU shall immediately send it to the applicant with the GDOU Admission Notice.

When the Visa Application form and the GDOU Admission Notice are received, the applicant takes them with other documents required to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate General to apply for the Student (entry) Visa.
Right after the Student Visa arrives and the air ticket has been booked, the applicants admitted GDOU as a freshman inform the International Students Service by fax or email about where and when to be met, getting ready all the things needed to live and study at GDOU and making sure of arrival at the given time as scheduled on the Admission Notice.

Within two days after accommodations, the new students download the International Student Information Form in the International Students page on our website, fill it out clearly and precisely, and hand it in to the International Students Service.

Within 5 days after the entry into China, guided by the staff of the International Students Service, the new students go in turn through registration procedures in the Financial Department, the Dean's Office, the Faculty admitted to, and the Library.

Within 15 days after the entrance to China, the new students are led to the Zhanjiang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, the People's Republic of China for a physical examination, and then to the Zhanjiang Public Security Bureau with all the necessary documents to apply for the Residential Permit. (If the Certificate of Health Examination is refused to be issued for some reasons, the student(s) shall pitifully be sent back home.)

With all the above procedures done as required, the new students are supposed to select courses and may register in the International Student Union for the membership of the association(s) they are interested in.

  • After you have decided to study at GDOU, you will have to choose what to study depending on your academic goal and our programs and admission requirements.
  • If you intend to learn the Chinese language and culture, you can apply directly to the GDOU Foreign Affairs Office (FAO) for a language student status.
  • If you are to study for a bachelor's or master's degree, you need to know what faculty you want to enter before applying for admission. You must select a faculty when you apply and you may have to select an academic program.
  • Review the Undergraduate Programs or Graduate Programs in About GDOU on our website. Get some academic advice from FAO if you are still trying to determine your academic goal.

  • Chinese Studies Programs

    Applicants to GDOU for a Chinese Studies program should be healthy, friendly, and mature, with no unfavorable records. In principle, no special academic education is required. Applicants for an undergraduate or graduate program are supposed to complete the language program before commencing the academic program if their Chinese proficiency is not up to the standards for their academic studies.

  • Undergraduate (Bachelor) Programs
  • All programs require senior high school completion for admission; only academic (university preparatory) high school courses are acceptable for admission.
  • All programs require four years of study
  • Since Chinese is the language of instruction at Guangdong Ocean University, candidates must be able to communicate competently in Chinese both orally and in writing, and students whose first language is not Chinese, may be required to present the result of the HSK, Band 3.
  • GDOU provides opportunities for students who do not meet the Chinese proficiency requirements. Completion of the full-time, non-credit Chinese for University Purposes (CUP) program allows students to gain Chinese language proficiency before starting their degree program. Applicants may be given admission based on successful completion of GDOU Chinese for University Purposes program.
  • Documents required to support your application for admission includes
  • All official transcripts
  • A copy of high school diploma
  • HSK score, if Chinese was not the language of instruction in your previous academic program, to be sent directly from the Department of Testing Affairs (HSK) under the Office of Chinese Language Council International
  • Two letters of reference (original)
  • One copy of health certificate
  • One copy of passport
Note # 1: A resume (outline work experience, extra-curricular activities, academic honors and activities since last year of study) is                also required if are not currently in school.
Note # 2: All official mid-year or final university or college transcripts are required if you are applying from another university or                 college.
Note # 3: All official transcripts for studies completed, cover letter (if applying from academic dismissal) and resume are required if                you are applying as a mature student.
           
  • Graduate (Master) Programs
  • The minimum university admission requirement is an Honors degree or its equivalent in the subject to be studied (i.e. a four-year bachelor's degree from an approved university). Candidates possessing a major in a field other than that of their graduate program will be required to take sufficient undergraduate courses to make up the equivalent of a GDOU undergraduate major in the field of graduate work.
  • All university transcripts should be original official documents and should be provided to you in sealed envelopes or sent directly to us from the issuing institutions. If it is not possible for the institution to produce another official transcript, you can make a copy of the original transcript and have your institution certify that the document is an accurate copy. The certified copy should then be provided to you in a sealed envelope or sent directly to us from the issuing institution. If your transcript must be translated into Chinese or English and your institution does not provide translated documents, your transcript can be translated elsewhere and then brought back to your institution to be certified as an accurate copy. The certified translated copy should then be provided to you in a sealed envelope or sent directly to us from the issuing institution.
  • Since Chinese is the primary language of instruction at GDOU, all applicants must possess adequate knowledge of written and spoken Chinese as a prerequisite to admission. Regardless of country of origin or citizenship status, candidates will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the Chinese language, and students whose first language is not Chinese, may be required to present the result of the HSK, Band 6.
  • GDOU provides opportunities for students who do not meet the Chinese proficiency requirements.   • Prospective Undergraduate Students

    As a potential student in the undergraduate (bachelor) programs at GDOU, you are invited to download our undergraduate application form in the Downloads on this website page and fill it out completely and clearly. Ask your referees to return the reference to you in a sealed envelope with their signature on the flap and return the sealed envelope with your application. Have the Registrar's Office with the high school you attended send a copy of your official transcripts to you in a sealed envelope.   • An application fee of US dollars 60.00 must accompany every application.

  • All students are required to purchase adequate hospital and medical coverage at the time of registration at GDOU. The cost is approximately RMB 350.00 to 800.00 per year for a single student.
  • The Zhanjiang Airport is 25 kilometers from the Main Campus. This should be the final destination to which overseas flights are booked via Hong Kong or Guangzhou. Contact the Foreign Affairs Office for transportation from the airport.
  • An orientation program for new international students is held in late August every year.

About Chinese studies, we offer undergraduate Chinese programs, Chinese for University Purposes programs, advanced training programs and language students exchange programs.

        If you wish to be admitted as a potential undergraduate or Bachelor of Arts in Chinese language and culture, you are supposed to download the undergraduate admission form, fill it out and send it in a single package including all the documents as indicated in How to Apply as prospective undergraduate students.

Differential fees are in effect for international students. Below is a typical budget for the academic year outlining approximate costs, which includes only basic budgeting items and does not include additional funds for travel, recreation, clothing and pocket money. All figures are based on the 2006-09 rates and may be subject to change.

  • RMB 500.00 or US dollars 60.00 (NOTE:  This fee is non-refundable)
  • Chinese Language Studies: RMB 8,000.00 or US dollars 1,000.00/one semester
    RMB 16,000.00 or US dollars 2,000.00/one academic year
    Summer Vacation Programs: RMB 4,000.00 or US dollars 500.00/4 weeks

  • Undergraduate Programs:
    Bachelor of Arts (B.A.): RMB 18,000.00 or US dollars 2,300.00/one academic year
    Bachelor of Science (B.S.): RMB 20,000.00 or US dollars 2,500.00/one academic year

  • Graduate Programs:
    Master of Arts (M.A.): RMB 20,000.00 or US dollars 2,500.00/one academic year
    Master of Science (M.S.): RMB 22,000.00 or US dollars 2,750.00/one academic year
Note: The tuition standards may change according to the enrollment requirements, current conditions of teaching and learning,           and personal needs of the admitted student.

 
  • RMB 1,600.00 or US dollars 800.00/one academic year.

  • RMB 400.00 or US dollars 50.00/ one month for students of Summer Vacation Programs
Note # 1: The above charge for accommodation is on students who share a room in the dormitories for native students. The room is normally shared by 4 students. The room is equipped with beds, writing tables, chairs, wardrobes, bookcases, electric fan, bathroom, toilet, telephone, Internet port, and so on. Students need to get ready for daily life necessities including bed articles, computers, etc. and pay the bills for telephone, internet, water, electricity, etc. on their won.

Note # 2: International students may apply for a dorm room shared with native students if they wish to live together with Chinese students for the convenience of learning the Chinese language and Chinese culture.

Note # 3: International students may also apply for a single or double room in the International Students Apartment or the International Staff Apartment at a daily rate of RMB 80.00-120.00 or US dollars 10.00-15.00, exclusive of bills for telephone, internet, water, electricity, gas, etc. The apartment is equipped with one living room, one or two bed rooms, kitchen, bathroom, toilet, furniture, telephone, TV, Internet, washing machine and all other necessities for livelihood and study.

Note # 4: International students can rent a room off campus with the help of the admission staff with the Foreign Affairs Office. 

  • RMB 800.00 or US dollars 100.00/one academic year.
Note: This fee is charged in advance. The exact fee depends on the actual expenditure on textbooks and other materials every academic year. The overpayment is refundable at the end of the academic year, and the insufficiency shall be deducted from the fee for those of the following academic. 

  • Insurance: RMB 350.00-800.00 (subject to change according to the contents and individual requirements)

  • Graduation Fee:  RMB 2,500.00 or US dollars 300.00 (graduation ceremony, if desired, is extra)

  • Degree Program Change Fee:  RMB 800.00 or US dollars 100.00

  • Master's Degree Thesis Review Fee:  RMB 7,200.00 or US dollars 900.00
  • Fees are subject to change without notice.

  • Candidates for graduation will not receive a diploma until all financial obligations have been paid in full.

  • All funds are either in Chinese or U.S. currency.  Tuition is payable in full upon registration. However, if this is not possible, other arrangements may be made with the University on an individual basis.

  • Transcripts will not be issued to students with outstanding balances on their accounts.

  • Students enrolled in some courses in certain faculties may have additional expenses for tuition, fieldwork, materials and/or instruments.

  • Scholarship funding for international students is limited and highly competitive. International students should not depend on scholarships and bursaries to pay their costs while at university.
